Once again, in March 2010, experts and specialists from NCCN and Asia will converge at the 3rd NCCN Annual Asia Scientific Congress to discuss new developments in the NCCN Guidelines and learn about the highlights of the NCCN Annual Conference in the US. This event will allow oncologists to gain an in-depth understanding of the Guidelines and how they are used in daily practice. Moreover, it is also a unique channel through which Asian oncologists can present their own patient management techniques and clinical findings to a wider audience, thereby contributing to the effort of improving quality of care for cancer patients worldwide.

Background:
The US National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) is a not-for-profit alliance of 21 of the world’s leading cancer centers, dedicated to improving the quality and effectiveness of care provided to patients with cancer. Through the leadership and expertise of clinical professionals at NCCN Member Institutions, NCCN develops resources that present valuable information to the numerous stakeholders in the health care delivery system. As the arbiter of high-quality cancer care, NCCN promotes the importance of continuous quality improvement and recognizes the significance of creating clinical practice guidelines appropriate for use by patients, clinicians, and other health care decision-makers. Their publication, the NCCN Clinical Practice Guidelines in Oncology™, is a standard clinical reference not only in the US, but also for physicians worldwide. The primary goal of all NCCN initiatives is to improve the quality, effectiveness, and efficiency of oncology practice so patients can live better lives.
Since 2005, NCCN has successfully collaborated with leading Chinese oncologists (under the leadership of Prof. Yan Sun) to develop Chinese editions of the NCCN Guidelines tailored for the clinical practice in China, as well as to organize various related educational activities. This accomplishment has also encouraged other efforts to compile country-specific guidelines, leading to development of the Korean Edition of the Guidelines and the Asia Consensus Statements in recent years.
A central part of the NCCN initiative in Asia is the NCCN Annual Asia Scientific Congress, which has been the focus of attention for members of the oncology fraternity in China and Asia since the spring of 2008. At this meeting, scientific exchange takes place between top oncologists from NCCN’s member institutions and cancer experts from all over China and Asia. As word spread about the high quality of the Congress, it drew almost double the number of participants in the second year. Driven by this tremendous support, an even more stimulating program has been drawn up for participants of the 3rd Congress.
